About Solomon ben Binyamin HaLevi

Solomon ben Benjamin (d. Izmir, 1693) and his son Benjamin flourished in Izmir. Solomon, who may have been a sympathizer of Shabbetay Ṣevi (1626–1676), participated in a rabbinical dispute with Israel ben Ḥayyim Benveniste (1644–1719) and the rabbis of Istanbul and authored a collection of rulings on the arrangement of the Arbaʿa Ṭurim called Lev Shelomo (Salonica, 1705), which included also the writs of divorce (Heb. giṭṭin; sing. geṭ) that he issued from 1686 until 1691. Solomon’s grandson, Israel Jacob ben Benjamin, published the book in 1705.
