Commodore Somerville Nicholson was Navigating Officer of the flagship of Commodore Perry during the famous expedition to Japan in 1856 and the Commander of the Marblehead during the Civil War.
During the Civil War he was Commander of the Marblehead and was with Admiral Farragut at New Orleans. He was engaged for a considerable time in the blockage. In July 1862 he was appointed Lieutenant Commander. For a time he was also Commander of the steamer, State of Georgia. In 1881 he was retired with the rank of Commodore. Since then he had lived in Washington.
