About Mgr Maurice Roy
Overview
Roy's father was Dean, Faculty of Law at Laval University and judge of Court of Magistrates. He was ordained in 1927 and elected bishop of Trois-Rivières, February 22, 1946. He was installed as Cardinal from 1946-1981. Roy was Chaplain, with the rank of captain, of the 22nd Royal Regiment, 1939; he served in Great Britain, Italy, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany, 1939-1943. He was awarded the Order of the British Empire for his "extremely courageous conduct" as a chaplain in the war. Roy was a military vicar of Canada from 1951 to 1982. He also visited the battle front of Korea. For his services at battlefronts, Roy was made a Companion of the Order of Canada in 1971.
