In 1817 when he was about 24 years old, James came out in Moodie's Party and worked for two years in Cape Town before moving to the Easter District as a volunteer in the Frontier War of 1819. After the was (war), James live in Grahamstown before he moved the farm "Collingham"; he married Sophia Sarah Harris, born ca. 1800, who had come out with her brother William in Sephtons's Party in 1820; one child was born to them, James, in June 1824, at "Collingham"; James, Snr., died on 13.5.1874, aged 81; Sophia died on 15.8.1894, aged 94. Sophia Harris was born in the British Isles, probably in or near London, in about 1803. Sophia was the servant of W Shaw. Aged 17, Miss Harris and family emigrated to South Africa in 1820. They were members of the Sephton party from London which sailed aboard the Aurora from Deptford to Port Elizabeth. From there they were transported by ox wagon to their allotted land on the Eastern Frontier of the Cape Colony. St Olave's Church, Southwark was a church in Southwark, England which is believed to be mentioned in the Domesday Book. It was located on Tooley Street which is named after the church, ie 't'olous'.
