Sophie of Pomerania, Duchess of Pomerania, by Wikipedia

Sophia of Pomerania-Stolp (1435 – 24 August 1497), was a Duchess of Pomerania by birth, and married to Eric II, Duke of Pomerania.

Sophia was the daughter of Bogislaw IX, Duke of Pomerania and Maria of Masovia. In 1446, her father died and was succeeded by his cousin, Eric of Pomerania, former King of Denmark, Norway and Sweden. Sophia became the heir of Eric of Pomerania's private fortune.

In 1451, Sophia was married to Eric of Pomerania-Wolgast, making her spouse the heir of Eric of Pomerania's territories, while Sophia remained the heir of Eric of Pomerania's private fortune. At the death of Eric of Pomerania in 1459, Sophia's husband united Pomerania through the inheritance of Pomerania-Stolp and Pomerania-Rügenwalde by his marriage, while Sophia became the sole possessor of the vast fortune brought by Eric of Pomerania from his former kingdoms in Scandinavia, as well as the wealth he had acquired by his piracy activity on Gotland.

As Eric refused to allow Sophia any of the political power over the territories he acquired through her, which she felt she was entitled to, the couple separated.[1] Sophia moved to Rügenwalde Castle with her children and her lover, Hans of Maszerski.[2] In 1470, she refused to finance her husband's war with Brandenburg. She was widowed in 1474.

Sofia, wife of Duke Erik II of Wolgast. King Eric XIII, who on Midsummer Day 1439 was deposed from all three Nordic kingdoms, died in 1459 in Rügenvalde, aged 77. He bequeathed to Sofia all his furniture, jewelry and cash, in a word, all the treasure he had brought with him from the Nordics and which he had in part increased during the time he lived by piracy on Gotland. This treasure was considerable and consisted, among other things, of a large gold bar, worth 100,000 gold guilders; Image of the Savior in Arabian gold, the size of a fifteen-year-old youth; all the twelve apostles of fine silver, large as twelve years old boys; a tabernacle of gold for the holy sacrament;
a goose of clear gold and a monoceros entirely of gold, except for many precious gold and silver vessels, etc. From this you can see what great treasures and riches there were in ancient times in the Nordics. - Sofia was a princess, not of the best kind. It seems that she became greedy after she received her treasure, because she moved away from her husband and did not want to help him with money, which he needed in and for the war against Brandenburg. When she moved to Rügenvalde, she took her eight children with her. These were neglected, went sloppy and wandered the streets and were despised by other children. One farmer, Johan Lange, took in one of the children, Bogislaus, and dressed him. - Duke Erik died on 6 July 1474 and a few days later the princes Wratislaw and Casimir. Bogislaus, then the only heir to Pomerania, wanted to poison Sofia, like theprevious brothers, with a poisoned sandwich, but her court jester revealed it to Bogislaus. The sandwich was given to a dog, which immediately died, causing Sofia to flee to Danzig. Bogislaus later became Duke of Pomerania, under the name of Bogislaus X and so distinguished that he acquired the nickname the Great .
