Sophie, the daughter of Zisie Felsen and Beile nee Geloebter, was born in Holyn -- a town then in the Austrian crown land of Galicia and now in southwestern Ukraine. As adults, Sophie and her husband Bernhard lived in Altenburg, Thuringen, Germany. They had four children. The oldest, Friedel, died in the 1920s. In the 1930s, as Nazi influence grew, the two youngest children, a daughter and a son, were sent to safety in England, and son Felix escaped first to Prague and then to Jerusalem. However, Sophie and her husband remained in Altenburg and were deported to Auschwitz in September 1943. Sophie is believed to have perished there several months later, and Bernhard died at Dachau soon after liberation.
