Mrs. Sophy Lederer Cohen, 169 E. 90th street, wife of Henry H Cohen, and a member of a pioneer Cleveland Jewish family, passed away suddenly at Lakeside Hospital, Saturday, March 13. The deceased was sixty-six years of age.
Mrs. Cohen was born in Cleveland in 1860 in the residence on Woodland avenue near old Belmont street, which was for many years the residence of her father and mother, the late Mr. and Mrs. Charles Lederer and family.
The late Mrs. Lederer. mother of the deceased, before her marriage was Miss Charlotte Weidenthal, who came to the United States from Bohemia with her brothers, Bernard and Leopold Weidenthal, and her sister Fannie, and with their mother, Mrs. Rebecca Neumann Weidenthal, in the year 1849. In Cleveland in that year the family joined Abraham Weidenthal, another son of Mrs. Rebecca Weidenthal and the late Moses Weidenthal. Emanuel Weidenthal, still another son, came to Cleveland in 1865.
Mrs. Cohen attended Mayflower school. She was the mother of Edward S., Elma C. Smith, the late Helen Cohen Kastriner, Ruth C. Mendelson and Clara S.Cohen; grandmother of MitchellCohen, Lois, Ralph, and Sally Mendelson and Charles L. Kastriner, and sister of Mrs. Edna L Goldsoll and L W Lederer. Burial was at Mayfield Cemetery. Rabbi Silver officiated.
