About Spyridon (Spyros) Paxinos, Kalatzis/Liris
Died of cancer of esophagus. Spiro was Big Mama's favorite brother. She was always talking about what a generous spirit he had and his great sense of humor. None of her other brothers cared for her the same as he did. They lived together in the same household until he died - even when he was working on a ship he always returned to be with my Mother. My Mother said he made her laugh and brought joy into her heart. Spiro used to be a cook on foreign ships and traveled throughout the world. I have lots of post cards and letters he sent to my Mother from just about every port. Unfortunately for me, they're all in Greek! He brought home exotic things from the Philipines like carved water buffalo horns or from India - little marching elephants with tusks all tucked neatly into a little ivory rimmed box. Thio Spiro also bought my mother her Baldwin grand piano which she loved to play and which Elaine, my sister, mastered. Thio Spiro owned several restaurants and donut houses, the best restaurant was on Market Street in the Examiner Building. He lost that restaurant when someone sued him for leaving the sidewalk grate to the basement open without a warning sign. I have several pictures of him at this restaurant. Sadly, from this point on he was unsuccessful in his business ventures and allowed alcohol to intervene in his life. He is buried in the same grave site as my Mother Aliki, Father William and Baby Andrew William Sofos in the Greek Cemetery in Colma, CA. In death he is as he was in life - a loving brother to my Mother.
