Gamaliel Taylor was born in Ottumwa, Iowa on October 13, 1845. He was married November 26, 1874, to Laura Caroline Wright. Gamaliel Taylor was the son of Eber Taylor, born in New York State September 6,1811, died in Junction City, Oregon, July 20,1861 and Clarissa Stout. They were married in Iowa on April 4, 1841.

Clarissa Stout was the daughter of John Stout who was born in West Virginia on December 21, 1795, died in Ottumwa, Iowa, on may 6, 1858, married in Randolph County, West Virginia, 1815 to Mary Barbara Castner (Kestner- Kessner) who was born in West Virginia June 28, 1799, died at Albia, Iowa on May 20, 1876.

John Stout was the son of St. Ledger Stout who was born in Amwell Township, Hunterdon County, New Jersey, died in Beverly, West Virginia, 1806 and Anna Barcalo (Buckalow) born in New Jersey, died in West Virginia after 1806.

In 1803, St. Ledger Stout sold all his holdings in Beverly and moved over Laurel Mountain to Sugar Creek. He was living in Barbour County when he appraised the estate of Anthony Smith in Aug. 1803. St. Ledger died and his estate was appraised June 18, 1806. The men who appraised Stout's estate were William Smith, Sr., Vandle Cosner [Casner] (John Hill's son-in-law of Sugar Creek), and Henry Paine (William Smith's son-in-law of Sugar Creek). The Administrix was daughter (Jo) Ann Stout Smith. Mentioned in the will were John and Leonard Stout, sons of St. Ledger Stout. John Stout, the son of St. Ledger, married Barbara Cosner [Casner], daughter of Vandle and Elizabeth (Hill) Cosner [Casner] of eastern Barbour County on January 18, 1816. Leonard's wife was named Rachael.
