About Stephen Bumphrey
"[Stephen] was a native Massachusetts, and in 1834 became a resident of Pennsylvania, where he lived until 1836, when he took up his adobe in Hennepin county, Illinois. Two years later he removed to Center Grove, Bureau county, where he purchased eighty acres of land upon which he resided until 1847.
He then sold that property and went to La Salle county, settling near Harding, where he purchased land and lived until 1853. In that year he removed to Black Hawk county, Iowa, and he died in 1854, at the age of forty-two years, while on his way from Dubuque.
He was a consistent member of the Methodist Episcopal church and his political views were in accord with the principles of the Whig party. His wife, also a native of Mass., died in 1845, at the age of thirty-seven years. They were married in the state of their nativity and became the parents of seven children."
