About Stephen Fleming
Famine in West Cork: The Mizen Peninsula Land & People, 1800-1852: a Local Study of Pre-famine and Famine Ireland By Patrick Hickey Mercier Press 2002 p.16" Not all of the planters were soldiers of course; some of them were merchants, for example, the Flemings who came from Glasgow. One of these, Lionel Fleming, came to Skibbereen in the seventeenth century as a merchant and land agent to the Bechers. A son of his, Stephen, married a daughter of Henry Becher of Aughadown. A grandson of Stephen, named Lionel, bought the townland of Ballydevlin near Goleen from William Richard Hull.
