Stephen Howland was born on 14 May 1716 in Dartmouth, Bristol County, Massachusetts Bay.[1]
In 1729, his father, Henry Howland wrote in his will, “I Give & bequeath to my Son Stephen Howland and to his heirs and Assigns forever thirty acres of Land Lying Near ye New Sawmill also accross Noquacueh River as by ye Return of the Survey thereof may Appear.”[2]
Stephen Howland married Mary Briggs on 22 December 1743.[3]
The work of Franklyn Howland in 1885 said about Stephen Howland on page 94. He believed that Stephen Howland settled in Washington Hollow, New York near Nine Partners Friends' school. His descendants gave the account of him.[3]
“His wife was Mary. He owned and sailed in a West India merchantman from New Bedford? The last voyage, the vessel went ashore in a storm and was wrecked. Stephen was mate of her at the time. It was reported and believed in New Bedford that the crew was lost, but they were not. When Stephen returned to him home his wife was rinsing clothes at the well in the yard, and he reached her side before she knew of the presence of any one. Upon looking around she fainted and fell in the ground. She was borne into the house by her husband, and it required considerable effort to resuscitate her. This occasioned a good deal of excitement in the little village of New Bedford. He discontinued sea service at his time, sold his goods and chattels, and accompanied by his wife and maiden sisters Mary and Elizabeth? moved to Dutchess co., N.Y. He was about 6 feet in height, weighing over 200 pounds. His son Stephen was about 5 feet 10 inches, and weighed as high as 250 pounds; his g. s. Stephen was about 5 feet 10 inches, and weighed over 200 pounds; his g. s. Nehemiah measured 6 feet 2 1/2 inches, was erect and strong; his g. g. s. William, son of Nehemiah, has weighed as high as 264 lbs.”[3]
