Stephen Hoxsie was born on 28 November 1713, in Richmond, Kings, Rhode Island. He was the son of John Hoxsie (1677-abt.1767) and Mary (Hull) Hoxsie (1681-1734).[1]

On 27 February 1735, Stephen married Elizabeth (Kenyon) Hoxsie (1720-1778) in Richmond, Rhode Island.[2]

The couple had the following children, born in Richmond:

Stephen, b. 8 May 1738, m. Elizabeth Tefft
Elizabeth, b. 13 Jul 1740, m. Thomas Rogers, Jr.

Stephen Hoxsie lived near the Friends Meeting house in Richmond, and he became clerk of the Meeting in 1747, and for 27 years he created all the records. He was a man of influence and often preached at Meeting.

Stephen was made a freeman at Westerly, Rhode Island on 4 May 1736. He served as Justice of the Peace for Charlestown 1739-1741, and Richmond 1757-1758. He was a Deputy to the Rhode Islnad Assembly in 1744.

Stephen became a widower in 1778, and he married secondly Abigail Austin (1725-1817), widow of John Ball and Abraham Deuel, and daughter of Robert Austin and Hannah Crandall.[3]

Stephen Hoxsie was incorrectly proved to be a patriot of the Revolution, by furnishing a substitute. This fact has been proven to belong to his son Stephen Hoxsie, Jr. So far, no record of any patriotic service for Stephen Hoxsie, Sr., has been found.

Stephe Hoxsie died at age 79 in Richmond, Rhode Island. He is buried in the Usquepaug Cemetery in Richmond, Washington County, Rhode Island. [4]
