About Michael Maybrick
Vocalist, Song-Composer.Born Michael Maybrick in Livepool, England in 1844. He was an English composer and singer, best known under his pseudonym Stephen Adams as the composer of the 1892 "The Holy City." This song was the most popular religious songs in the English language. Michael Maybrick could play the piano with brilliance and accuracy when he was 8 years old.At the age of 14 he played the organ at St. Peters, Livepool, and when he was 15 he distinguished himself as a composer of anthems. Michael Maybrick at the age of 22 went abroad to study harmony and composition at Leipzig, under Moscheles, Plaidy and Richter. He had a fine baritone voice. He also wrote hundreds of songs with Frederick Weatherly such as A Warrior Bold and Nancy Lee. On March 1892, he married his forty-year-old housekeeper, Laura Withers. Michael Maybrick brother James Maybrick, later was suspect in the Jack the Ripper case, whose wife Florence was the lead suspect and convicted of his suspicious murder in 1889. Michael Maybrick became chairman of the Isle of Wright Hospital, and was five times mayor of Ryde.
