About Stephen Miller
YDNA R-M269
Several unsourced trees list his wife as Katherine Katy Haverbout. However, this is not supported by a marriage record. There is also confusion between two Stephens born in Cumberland Co., PA, one who remained in Cumberland Co., PA, and this one, who died in Nicholas Co., KY. The Cumberland PA Stephen served in the revolutionary war under Capt. Berryhill; this one did not.
The list of this Stephen's children comes from a suit on a deed filed 1830 by his heirs in Nicholas Co., KY:
"Whereas by a Decree of the Nicholas Circuit Court rendered at its September Term 1830 in a suit in chancery wherein the Heirs of William Smith decd...... were complainants and the Heirs of Stephen Miller decd. viz. Jacob Miller, John Miller, Abraham Miller, David Miller, William Miller, Philip Miller, Stephen Miller, Samuel Miller, Joseph Miller, Paul Eckerly & Sarah his wife late Sarah Miller, Andrew Summers, John Summers and the residue of the children and Heirs of Peggy Summers decd. late Peggy Miller were Defts. It was Decreed that the said Defendants, Heirs of Stephen Miller decd., should on or before the third day of the March Term of the sd. Nicholas Circuit Court then next ensuing convey to the Complts. the Heirs of sd. William Smith Decd. a certain tract of land......" Nicholas Co KY Deed Book I, pages 444-446.
Stephen is named as a son of Jeremiah and Elizabeth Miller of Cumberland Co PA in the deed relating to the estate of Stephen's brother Philip who died in Carlisle PA in Sept.1793. All of Stephen Miller's children are named in the deed.
His wife is mentioned as "Katey" in another Nicholas Co. court document. But the maiden name "Haverbout" is not documented.
Stephen and his family left PA sometime before 1788. Two of his children, Peggy Miller Summers and Sarah Miller Ackerly have marriages recorded in Augusta Co, VA so it is apparent the family spent some time there before moving to Bourbon Co. KY (on land that later became Nicholas Co).
The family history as related by his great-grandchildren in "History of Callaway County" ties this Stephen to Phillip, William, and Abraham Miller of central Missouri.
