Stephen Maston Nixon I would like for him to be remembered before he became ill. He was a successful Planter and banker in Luling, Caldwell, County, Texas. He was loved and respected by everyone who knew him. He was not the person who walked down the street in Luling, Texas May 7, 1904, shot two men, and killed them. His doctors said he was an invalid for the last few years and had just returned from Cuba receiving treatment for his Mental Illness, I would say, they didn't go as far as to say this, but newspaper reports stated he was in a complete nervous breakdown. The sad fact was, why did he even have firearms, and why he was walking the streets? He died of a brain hemorrhage in jail on April 3, 1905, waiving his right to. a trial. In 1904, they didn't have proper treatment for mental illness. His wife was devoted, as were his Nixon relatives and friends who knew him before this tragedy. She stayed by his bedside until his death caring for him. Most likely today he would've had a different outcome and perhaps a proper diagnosis.

    • It never made sense to his family, they wanted to take him to the East Coast to Johns Hopkins Medical to be evaluated and diagnosed, but wasn't allowed. He continued to decline until he died of a brain hemorrhage in jail in 1905. He never went to trial, he pleaded guilty. No autopsy, he was buried the day he passed away.

    • In 1904 Nixon's Estate - a suit is filed in court for $ 100,000.00, about 2.8 million today. His widow took it all the way to the Supreme Court and they ruled in her favor. I knew this story had to be told for his widow and his son, they were strong. It was difficult on both sides for the children left behind.
