About Stephen Sterley
Stephen Sterley, born 1821 at Hankey C.P. first child of the 1820 Settlers to be born in South Africa.
Occupation blacksmith/wagon maker.
Died 9 August 1875 Port Elizabeth, buried in St. George's Park Cemetery, P.E. Rev Stokes conducted his funeral service which was attended by 300 people. Little children sang before the open grave.
Stephen Sterley was a generous, kind, humble and liberal person. He built a Baptist Sunday School costing £600 in Queen Street, Port Elizabeth.
Stephen married Charlotte Mary Henley on 9 January 1842 at the Methodist Church in Uitenhage, she was the daughter of John Elliot Henley and Mary Henley nee Beal. The name Henley occurs frequently among their descendants.
Stephen and Charlotte had a large family of 11 children. The youngest child was named John Arthur Beal Bustard.
