-------------------------------------

Thomas STERLEY arrived with his parents, Thomas STERLEY and Anne MOORCROFT, as members of Damant's party of 1820 Settlers. The family came from the village of Fakenham in Dorset.

He became Port Elizabeth's Police Constable in 1822. His salary was £48 per annum and was never increased, but as his duties increased he was granted assistants and was appointed as jailor in 1828. In 1829, he married Anne FRANZE, daughter of John Christopher FRANZE of Baillie's party. Anne FRANZE died in 1844 and in 1845 Thomas married Amelia LASSOM.

Thomas died in Port Elizabeth 1854. The two small cottages opposite No. 7 Castle Hill, Port Elizabeth [McCLELAND Parsonage House] were built to accommodate his family."
