Stephen Terry was probably born in 1529 at Long Sutton, Hampshire, England.An alternate birth date of 1516 has been suggested, but seems unlikely given the estimated ages of his father and mother at the time and the fact that if true he would have been 39 years of age at his first marriage and about 90 years of age at his death – both very advanced ages for these events.

Stephen Terry was a substantial landowner in the Hundred and Manor of Crondal, and one of its wealthiest men.According to the Customary of 1568, only four men in the whole of the Hundred and Manor of Crondal paid more taxes than he did.

He married Alice Cannar (or Connor) in 1555 at South Warnborough, England.Alice Cannar was born at Long Sutton, Hampshire, England in 1533, and died at Long Sutton, Hampshire, England in 1588.

This union produced seven known children:

1. John (the elder),
2. Roger,
3. James,
4. Stephen,
5. Thomas,
6. Alice who died as a child, and
7. John (the younger).

Again, the chronology of births strongly suggests additional female children who have not been identified (although none are mentioned in their father’s will).
