Stephen Yates sold land 05 May 1818, in Washington Co., KY. He firs t came to St. Louis, Co., MO. After a time they moved to Callaway Co ., MO. His son Thomas is in Monroe Co., MO in 1832. Stephen drown ed in the Salt River, and his body was never recovered. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------- Indian Creek, is the location of St. Stephen's Catholic Church and Ce metery. The 5 acres of the land for the church was donated by Stephe n A. Yates, so the church was named in his honor . The first church wa s built of logs , and the first entries of record are in 1833. Sometim e later it was rebuilt of brick and remained until the day of March 10 , 1876. The worst storm that ever struck Monroe Co., descended upon In dian Creek. At the time, the population was 350, and many shops. The town was prac tically destroyed by the twister and the church was leveled. The chu rch was rebuilt again, and again destroyed on March 11, 1907 by fire a fter being stuck by lightening. Once again it was rebuilt and still s tands today. The maid en name is a problem, but Zella could be short for Priscilla.
