Steve was a full-blood Cherokee man

Biography:
Born between 1860 and 1873, Steve was the son of a Creek man and a Cherokee woman, he does not remember the name of his mother, but he recalls that his mother's parents were said to be both Cherokee and considered himself a full-blood Cherokee.

Steve partnered with a Cherokee woman named Cateya who left him after the birth of their daughter Nellie. Nelli spent her time between her father's farm near Marble, Sequoya district, IT, and her mother's place in the Illinois district.

According to the Canton Indian School records, Steve was admitted on September 29, 1917, and there is no diagnosis on record.

In the letter dated February 17, 1934, from Dr. L.L. Culp to the Commissioner of Indian Affairs, Steve was admitted from Muskogee, IT (probably by the commissioner of the Five Tribes?). He died at the Canton Asylum on October 8, 1917, and was buried in the Canton Hiawatha Cemetery tier 1 plot 88

His profile is part of the The Canton Asylum One Place Study.
