About Submit Eastman

Biography

Submit Belding was born 13 May 1732.[1]

Submit Belding, daughter of Lieut. Jonathan Belding & Hepsibah Dickinson, and David Keyes of Weston (now Warren) Massachusetts, filed an intention to marry 30 July 1757.[2] They were married 31 Aug 1757,[1][3] in Warren or Northfield, Massachusetts.

A story that seems to have been passed down is that Submit before her wedding went to Hatfield and "bought a piece of beautiful fine red cloth for her wedding-dress. Then she wove a blanket, and about a week before the day brought down from the best chamber the wedding dress and hung it with the blanket, out in the air. There was much to be done in the house by the daughters in those early days, and she went about her work singing. Suddenly a shadow passed the window, and what was her distress to see an Indian walking off with her beautiful gown and blanket on his arm. She called to him and begged him to come back, but he only waved his hand and, grunting, Ugh! very pretty," hastened toward the great swamp."[4]

After her first husband died in 1761, she married, 3 Dec 1763, Deacon John Eastman of Hadley, Massachusetts.[1][5]

She died 23 May 1816, age 84,[5] in East Hartford, Connecticut, according to one source, [5] however, none of the death announcements in the local papers say she died in East Hartford, but rather in Hartford.[6][7][8] Submitt Eastman, relict of Deacon John Eastman was buried in the Old Hadley Cemetery in Hadley, Massachusetts.[9]

She made a will 22 March 1805: Submit Eastman of Hadley, County of Hampshire, and Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Bequests to son John, son David, grandsons John Porter & William Porter, daughter Hepzibah Eastman, daughter Sarah Porter. Executors: John Eastman, Eliazur Porter.[10]
