Dom Manoel, by the grace of God, King of the Maldive Islands and of the three patanas of Cuaydu, and of the seven islands of Pullobay, of the conquest and navigation of all the coats of Sumatra, and of the Strait of Manacuma, etc. b. at Malé, 1531. Educaed privately. Usurped the throne from his half-brother, before before 2nd May 1549. Installed as Sultan Hassan IX Svasi Sri Dhirukusalokya Maha Radun. Fled to Cochin in 1551 (two years and nine months into his reign) where he accepted Portuguese protection and converted to Catholicism on 1st January 1552 o.s. Thereafter styled "His Highness Dom Manoel, by the grace of God, King of the Maldive Islands and of the three patanas of Cuaydu, and of the seven islands of Pullobay, of the conquest and navigation of all the coats of Sumatra, and of the Strait of Manacuma, etc. Restored as suzerain by the Portuguese 19th May 1558, but remained under their protection at Cochin. The islands being governed in his name by regents appointed or approved by the Portuguese authorities in Goa, including Andreas Andre [Andiri Andirin] and Muhammed Bodu Thakurufa'anu Khatib of Uteemu. No Portuguese vessels were permited to trade nor foreign subjects permitted to travel to or engage with the islands without Dom Manoel's license. m. (first) at Malé, Dona Maria, who also became a Christian but d. before 1553. m. (second) at Goa, 1554, Dona Leonor de Ataíde, daughter of Dom Heitor de Sousa de Ataíde, a Portuguese nobleman who served in Gujarat, Cochin, and the Maldives He died at Cochin, aged over 50.
