Paduka Sri al-Wakil al-Imam Sultan Mahmud Ri'ayat Shah Zilu'llah fil'Alam Khalifat ul-Muminin ibni al-Marhum Sultan 'Abdu'l Jalil Shah, Sultan and Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Johor and Pahang and their dependencies. b. 24th March 1756, younger son of H.H. Paduka Sri Sultan 'Abdu'l Jalil V Mu'azzam Shah ibni al-Marhum Sultan Sulaiman Badr ul-'Alam Shah, Sultan and Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Johor and Pahang and their dependencies, by his wife, H.H. Tengku Puteh binti Raja Chelak, educ. privately. Succeeded on the death of his elder brother, 1770. Accepted Dutch protection 10th November 1784. Reigned under a Council of Regency until freed of this restriction by the Dutch, 7th February 1787. Established his capital at Daik. m. (first) Y.M. Encik Engku Putehibinti Dato' Bendahara Paduka Raja Tun 'Abdu'l Majid, Encik Engku Puan (d.s.p. at Kuala Pahang, 1803, bur. there at the Royal Cemetery), daughter of Y.M. Sri Paduka Tun 'Abdu'l Majid bin Dato' Temenggong Sri Maharaja Tun Mutahir, Dato' Bendahara Paduka Raja, of Pahang, by his wife, Y.M. Tun Engku Besar, a Bugis Princess from Endau. m. (second) Encik Makoh binti Ja'afar (m. second, 1812, Daing Menipi, the Salawatang, a Bugis chief of the family of To' Petila), daughter of Encik Ja'afar, Daing Maturang, of the family of To' Majo, by his wife, Encik Halima, of the same family. m. (third) 1780, Encik Mariam binti Dato' Hassan (d. at Lingga, 1831), daughter of Dato' Bandar Hassan, a Bugis chief from Sidenreng in Sulewesi, by Encik Senai [Pitis], a Balinese slave girl. m. (fourth) at Riau, before 12th April 1804, Y.M. Raja Hamida binti Raja Haji, Tengku Putri (b. after 1758; d. at Kota Ranteng, Penyengat Island, Riau, 5th August 1844 or 20th Rajab 1260 AH, bur. there), who retained possession of the Royal regalia and refused to surrender them for the installation of Sultan 'Abdu'l Rahman, until forcibly wrested from her by the Dutch in 1822, daughter of H.H. Paduka Sri Raja Haji bin Raja Chelak, Yang di-Pertuan Muda of Riau, by his fourth wife, Y.A.M. Raja Fatima binti Daing Kamboja, Tengku Perak, eldest daughter of H.H. Paduka Sri Daing Kamboja bin Daing Parani, Yang di-Pertuan Muda of Riau. He d. at Fort Tanna, Bukit Chengah, Lingga, 12th January 1811 (bur. Masjid Jami', Daik, Lingga), without having named a successor
