Published in "The Mercury" of Thursday 24 May 1894, John (who would die young himself in 1901) uses his mother's surname from her later marriage, which he replaces in later years with "Rattenbury":
Taylor.-In loving memory of my dear mother, Susan Taylor, who departed her life at Spring Bay, May 24, 1888.
Through all pain at times she'd smile, A smile of heavenly birth, And when the angels called her home She smile farewell to earth. Heaven retaineth now my treasure, Earth the lonely casket keeps, And the sunbeams love to linger Where my darling mother sleeps.
Inserted by her youngest and ever-loving son, John E Rattenbury.
Memoriam in "The Mercury" of Monday 25 May 1896:
"RATTENBURY. - In loving memory of my dear mother, who died at Spring Bay, Tasmania, May 21, 1888.
Although you have gone, my darling mother, To a land that's bright and fair. You know that I still love you dearly, And hope some day to meet you there,
Inserted by her youngest and ever-loving son, J. E. Rattenbury, N.S. W."
and in "The Mercury" of Monday 24 May 1897:
"In Memoriam. RATTENBURY -In loving memory of my dear mother, who died at Spring Bay, May 24, 1888.
My home was once a happy home, with my darling mothers cheer; But God has taken her away. And I think of her in tears.
Inserted by her youngest and loving son, J. E. Rattenbury, Now South Wales."
From "The Mercury" of Friday 27 May 1898:
"In Memoriam. RATTENBURY.-In loving memory of my dear mother, who died at Spring Bay on May 24, 1888.
There is but one spot on earth that I cherish, That is dearer than gold is to me, That's where my darling mother lies sleeping, In a grave far away o'er the sea.
Inserted by her youngest and loving son, J. E. RATTENBURY, N.S.W."
Also published in "The Mercury", of Thursday 24 May 1900:
"In Memoriam. RATTENBURY.-The loving memory of my dear mother, who died at Spring Bay, May 24, 1888.
Although she's lying cold and dead, Her heart in ever still, I'll never have a loving one The vacant place to fill. Inserted by her youngest and loving son,
J. E. RATTENBURY, N.S.W."
John's last tribute to his mother (sadly, John himself would die in Sydney about 3 months after this publication, aged 27), from "The Mercury" of Friday 24 May 1901:
"RATTENBURY. -In. loving memory of my dear mother, who died at Spring Bay, May 24, 1888.
Although you are dead and gone, dear mother, My thoughts are still with you; And until I breathe my last on earth Will think of you in tears.
Inserted by her youngest and loving son-J. E. Rattenbury.
