About Susan Shoshana Eban
HAARETZ
By Jonathan Lis, Sep. 16, 2011
Suzy Eban, the widow of former Foreign Minister Abba Eban, died yesterday at the age of 90.
She is survived by her sister, Aura Herzog, who is the widow of Israel's sixth president, Chaim Herzog; her nephew, MK Isaac Herzog; a son, musician Eli Eban, and a daughter, Gila. "For me personally, she was a wonderful and much-loved aunt," Isaac Herzog recalled yesterday. "She was family-oriented, the sister who was closest to my mother.
"The story of her life is the personification of the Zionist story," he added. "Throughout her life, she demonstrated a deep commitment to the establishment of the state and to its welfare, and did so in an awe-inspiring manner. In her passing, she leaves to us all a glorious heritage of action and of contributing to the people and the state. May her memory be for a blessing."
Suzy Eban, nee Ambache, was born in Ismailiya, Egypt and raised in Cairo, where she met her future husband. Aubrey Eban was an officer in the British army who was stationed in Egypt. He went on to become one of the most influential statesmen in Israeli history. He served for many years as Israel's ambassador to the United Nations and was Israel's first ambassador to the United States. He also served as minister of education, as deputy prime minister and as foreign minister.
The funeral will take place on Sunday in the Kfar Shmaryahu cemetery. The exact time will be announced later.
