About Susan Hyland

Susan (a.k.a. "Susannah") Cork (a.k.a. "Corck") was the daughter of John & Rebecca (Roby or Robey) Cork (a.k.a. "Corck"). There is much confusion regarding Susan's place of birth and records can be found variously listing the location as Delaware County, OH, Union County, OH, and Pennsylvania. On July 4, 1854, Susan married Asa McCawley (a.k.a. "McCauley") in Delaware County, OH. Susan and Asa parented four children: Susan Malvina (a.k.a. "Melvina") McCawley, Raimeth "Ray" Gillead McCawley, Harriett "Hattie" M. McCawley, and Margaret J. "Jennie" McCawley. On February 17, 1863, Asa hauled a load of timber to a sawmill north of the town of Dublin, OH. Upon his arrival the steam boiler being used to power the saw exploded killing Asa and four other men instantly. On March 17, 1865, the widowed Mrs. Asa (Cork) McCawley married the widowed Seth Griffith Hyland (a.k.a. "Highland") in the Union County village of Jerome. Seth was then on leave from his Civil War unit - having recently been released from Libby Prison, a notorious POW camp located in Richmond, Virginia. Following the war, Susan and Seth parented 7 children: Clara Bell Hyland; Izetta May Hyland; an unnamed, stillborn female; Florence Magnetta Hyland; Seth Griffith "Griff" Hyland, Jr.; Pearl Eldin Hyland; and Merte "Myrta Mertie" Adenia Hyland.
