James Spooner, in order to avoid religious persecution due to his religious convictions (Puritan) did not conform to the Church of England's religious doctrine decided to join a group of Puritan families and move their families to Holland. Holland promised the Puritans freedom to practice their religion without persecution. In 1609, James and his family sailed to to Amsterdam and then moved to Leiden, Zuid, Holland. Holland was also a major producer of cloths.
