About Susan Starns
Born and raised in Southeast Kentucky the family went to Platte County Missouri where her grandfather had moved to around 1840. Here in 1848 a month and a half before her 16th birthday she married Thomas Starns Jr. Their first three children were born here; William Washington Aug 5, 1849, Margaret Elizabeth Sep 3 1851 and Robert Middleton Jan 9 1854. The family moved to Leavenworth Kansas where the family grew some more; Sarah Catherine was born on Jan 5,1856, Jesse Douglas Mar 18 1853. This growing family went down to Mc Lennon County Texas where John Henry was born on Mar 3 1860. Going back home to Leavenworth Kansas Mary Emma was born Aug 5 1862, Susan Jane (Jennie) was born July 27 1864, Lavina Belle April 2 1866, Benjamin Oakes Bradford April 30 1868. Then moving to Johnson County Kansas (Most Likely Montecello) the youngest was born Georgia Hannah (Birdie). The family then went by wagon train on down to Trinidad Colorado. Here Maggie married John Westley Browning who came with them on to Oregon. Susan's parents had come to Monroe Oregon by ox drawn wagon train in 1853. Earlier her grandfather James Lewis crossed the plains in 1851 to Oregon taking up a donation claim of 320 acres eight miles southeast of Silverton. The family settled in the Willamette Valley of Oregon until flooded out. Susan's brother John Lewis then came to Eagle Point, Jackson County, Oregon in 1860. Susan traveled with her Methodist minister husband to many locations in Christian service throughout her life. They last lived in Corvallis Oregon. Susan is buried next to her husband in Chrystal Lake Cemetery, Corvallis Oregon.

Susan Lewis Starns was the daughter of William Martin Lewis and Hannah Louise Snethen. She was the 8th of 12 children. In the early 1840s the Lewis family left Kentucky on Middle Fork of the Kentucky River on log rafts. They followed the rivers to Platte County, Missouri. There at the age of 15, Susan married 22 year old Thomas Starnes, Jr. on 5-10-1848. A year later he started on a path to become a minister with the Methodist Episcopal Church South. Thomas and Susan had 11 children between 1849 and 1871. Susan and the children followed Thomas as he was assigned to various territories by the church. He preached in Missouri, Kansas, Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Oregon and Washington. They arrived in Oregon on 10-19-1876 by wagon train. They met up with Susan's parents who had come to Monroe, Oregon in 1853. In 1894 -1898 Thomas and Susan had served at Fort Klamath as missionaries to the Klamath Indians. They were in charge of a girls' school there. Thomas died in Corvallis, Oregon 1905 and Susan died there 5 years later.
