About Susanna Fleming

It has been said that Susanna Tarleton was a cousin of the infamous British Colonel Banastre Tarleton during the American Revolution. He reportedly broke into the home of our ancestor Tarlton Fleming at Rock Castle in Goochland Co., Virginia. Tradition has it that when he saw his family's coat of arms on the parlor paneling, he angrily tore them down and carried them away. (See Col. Tarlton Fleming.)

Additional Curator's Notes

Susanna Tarleton was the daughter of Stephen Tarleton and Susanna Bates. She was most likely born in 1661 in St. Peter's Parish, New Kent County, Virginia. She married Charles Fleming and raised a large family. She died c. 1717 in St. Peter's Parish, New Kent County, Virginia.

Because of frequent attempts to attach her husband, Col. Charles Fleming, to important English or Scottish families, Susanna's details have often been bent to fit the picture particular authors want to create. Her date of birth has been set as early as 1656 and as late as 1680. Her place of birth has been recorded as England, as Henrico County, Virginia and St. Peter's, Virginia. Her date of death varies from 1657 to 1717, in either New Kent County or Goochland County, Virginia. These data fields have been locked with what the curator believes to be most accurate. As primary sources are found, they will be added.

There are a great many children credited to Susanna and Charles. This curator is still working through the list to very their true offspring. As sources are found to positively identify the children, the many notes below this Curator's Note will be cleaned up. They remain now as possible leads to the answers we seek.

Disputed child

It has been noted here in the past that her [Ann Dudley] parents were Charles Fleming and Susanna Tarleton. This is incorrect. Charles would have been born between 1692-1700. His parents, Alexander Fleming and Sarah Kennedy married in 1690. He was mentioned in his father's will in 1720 and given land. Ann Fleming Penn was born about 1706 making it impossible to be a daughter of Charles Fleming and Susanna Tarleton. Charles and Susanna did have a daughter named Anna, but she married Josias Payne.
