Susanna Reese was born ca 1812 in the Cherokee Nation (East) to Charles Reese and Nancy Timberlake. In 1929, Susanna had a daughter by James Hair (marriage date not known) and named her Nancy Ann Hair. Susanna's Cherokee name was "Sus-an-na-Da-La-Sa-Ne" Reese. Susanna, her parents and siblings were among the Cherokee in the exodus from their home in the east (Tennessee), arriving in the Indian Territory (now Oklahoma) about 1839 and settled in Sequoyah District, along Lee's Creek. Susanna likely married Mr. Brown after her arrival in the Indian Territory. Her daughter, Nancy Ann, was about nine to ten years old when they made the trek on the trail of tears to Indian Territory.
