About Susanna Martyn

Susanna was the child of Edward Holyoke and Prudence Stockton. [1] She was born in England, about 1630 probably at Tamworth in Staffordshire, where her father settled after his marriage in 1612. [2]She evidently came to Massachusetts Bay Plantation with her father in about 1637, making her an immigrant ancestor of future Martins.[2]

She married Michael Martin at Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts Bay Colony, on Setpember 12, 1656. [2]

Michael Martine and Susannah Holliocke, daughter of Edward of Rumney Marsh, were married by Governor John Endicott at Chelsea, Massachusetts, on 12 August 1656.[1]

Michael was a mariner and a publican. On 12 October 1669 Michael Martin, mariner, bought land nigh the new meeting house from Richard Martin. On 1 July 1678 Michael Martine was granted a license to keep a house of public entertainment. The license was renewed to 1682 when it was given to his widow.[2]

According to Mrs. William Cushing, the children of Michael and Susanna Martyn were the following, all born in Boston:[3]

1. Michael Martine, born 10 Feb. 1659;[4] d. 14 Feb. 1660. 2. Prudence Martine, born 26 March 1662;[5] d. 31 July 1662.
3. John Martyn, born 1 May 1664.[6]
4. Edward Martyn , born 12 July 1665.[7]
5. Susanna Martin, born 3 July 1672.[8

There may have been additional children; the reference in the will to "girls" suggests that there were multiple daughters living as of 1682.

Michael Martyn died in Boston on 26 March 1682.[9][10] Mrs. William Cushing provided the following transcript of the will of Michael Martyn, which was entered for probate on 2 May 1682 (Suffok Probate Records, vol. 6, p. 663):[3]

“The Deposition of Joshua Matson and Henry Eles: Matson aged 41 years or thereabouts and of Eles aged 38 years or thereabouts, that being in watching with Michael Martyn 21 Mar. [1682] the next morning we asked him if he had made a will. He said he had not. We asked him whither he would make a will or no. He called his son and said as soon as his son Edward was up he should write it. Henry Eles went up into the chamber and called his son Edward. In the meantime his wife went to him and spoke to him, also his cousin Mary Mould of Salem desired Henry to speak to him concerning how he would leave his estate while he was in his sences, which he was as far as we could desearn, being watching with him all the night. He did declare after our demand that he would leave the whole estate which he had here at his wife’s disposeing for fear least his son should be head strong and the girls should be wronged and that should stand as his last will and testament and further say not.”[3]

He was buried in Boston at Copp's Hill.[11] The gravestone inscription was recorded as "Here lyeth enterred ye Body of Michael Martyn aged 60 years dec'd March ye 26, 1682."[10]
