About Susanna Serfass
- Reference: MyHeritage Family Trees - SmartCopy: Jan 7 2016, 12:14:17 UTC
Susanna's maiden name was most likely "Hahn". In an article about the Serfass family in Volume III of "History of Lehigh County, Pennsylvania" by Charles Rhoads Roberts, her name is given as "Hone". However, no families by that name have been found in or around Northampton (or Lehigh) County in the late 1700s or early 1800s, whereas there were many "Hahn" families already in the same area at that time. One of those families was Johann Philip Hahn from the Plainfield Twp. area of Northampton County. That Hahn family genealogy has been fairly well documented but no evidence has been found to link Susanna to that family.
Also, the baptismal record of Johann Georg Serfass, son of Johannes and Susanna, in the records of the Moravian Church at Schoeneck, Plainfield (now Bushkill) Twp., Northampton Co., PA, gives her maiden name as "Hahn". (Moravian Church, Schoeneck, Register Book #2, Moravian Archives, Bethlehem, PA)
Susanna may have come from the North Whitehall area of Northampton Co. (now part of Lehigh County), PA. The fourth child of Johannes and Susanna Serfass was baptized at Unionville in North Whitehall. Also, one of the sponsors at the baptism was John Hahn, who may have been related to Susanna.
Susanna may have been one of the following: 1. Susanna Hahn, bz'd. 9 September 1759 at First Reformed Church, Philadelphia, a daughter of John Bernhard Hahn and Anna Maria.
2. Susanna Catharina Hans, born 1759 and baptized in Northampton (now Lehigh) Co. by Pastor Daniel Schumacher, a daughter of Ludewig and Anna Elisabeth Hans.
No record of Susanna's death or her burial location has been found. The orphans court documents at Northampton County courthouse in Easton, PA show that son, Joseph Serfass, filed the final account of John Serfass's estate in January of 1839 and that most of the estate balance had been paid out to the surviving children in 1835. Since Susanna's dower was to be paid out to the children after her death, Susanna may have died about this time.

Peter Phillip Hahn did not have a daughter Susanna. If you look at the confirmation records of the Plainfield Reformed Church (now St. Peters Lutheran Church) in Plainfield Township, Northampton Co., Pa, where Peter Phillip was one of the first elders, all of his children will be found. There is NO Susanna!!! His daughters were Maria Catharina Hahn married Heinrich Frantz, and Anna Barbara Hahn married to Jacob Sobers.
John Serfass died intestate. The administrator of his estate was his son, Joseph Serfass. On 8 August 1825, John's widow, Susan Serfas, made her mark on a release (known as a quit claim) to transfer her right and title to the administration of John's estate to her son, Joseph Serfass. On 10 August 1825, a bond of administration was filed in Northampton County by "Joseph Zerfass of Chestnuthill Township, weaver" and by sureties "George Kunkle of Chestnut Hill Township, yeoman, and Godfrey Greenzweig of Ross Township". On 11 December 1826 the first of several accounts was filed by administrator Joseph "Zerfass" showing an account balance of $811.34. (Estate file #3675, Northampton County Government Center, Easton, PA, under name of "John Zerfas")
