About Susannah Curl

Susannah Painter, the ninth and last child of Quakers Susannah (née Stratton) and John Painter, junior, was born on 14 April 1780 in Frederick County, Virginia.* The Painter family was then associated with the Crooked Run Monthly Meeting in Nineveh, now in Virginia's Warren County. Her father passed away in 1801.

Sometime after 1800, Susannah Painter relocated to the vicinity of Salem, Columbiana County, Ohio, where a Quaker community had formed. Her brother Jacob Painter settled near Salem in 1802. Her mother and her sister Sarah Holloway also moved there around 1806.

Susannah Painter and Samuel "Curle" were married on 26 July 1809 in Columbiana County, and soon relocated to Logan County, Ohio, where daughters Elizabeth and Rebecca are known to have been born in 1810 and 1817, respectively.

Susannah Curl died on 17 March 1819, probably in Zane Township, Logan County, Ohio.† Samuel Curl remarried later that year and was enumerated in 1820 in Zane Township.

There is no record of the burial of Susannah Curl (née Painter), but given her Quaker affiliation, probable residence, and reported date of death, she may be buried in the Darby Creek Cemetery. A Quaker community had formed in Zane Township at Darby Creek as early as 1804, becoming a monthly meeting in 1811. The meeting house burial ground became known as the Darby Creek Cemetery or Curl Cemetery.
