About Susanne “Ha-za-ho-ta-win” Graham
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=46933383
Susanne Istagiwin Ha-za-ho-ta-win Pennishon was born about 1785 at Rum River Area, MN. She is not the biological daughter of Jean Pennishon or Wapasha I. Wapasha I was born about 1750 and is the daughter of (Red Leaf) Wapasha I Chief. Wapasha I adopted her sister's daughter, and gave her the name Susanne Pennishon.
Susanne married Captain Duncan Graham between 1796 and 1802 at Minnesota; she was using the name Susanne Graham in 1796. There is documentation showing that Duncan Graham took a wife named Susan Pennishon, whose Indian name was "Istagiwin" meaning "Brown Eyes", about 1796. There is also documentation showing that about 1800 he married Susanne, who was known as the "Gray Huckleberry Woman."
On February 9, 1843, in a ceremony at Wabasha, Susanne's husband, Duncan Graham (postmaster), named the town after her grandfather, Chief Wapashaw I.
Susanne died March 2, 1848 in Mendota, MN and was buried that same day at Calvary Cemetery in Faribault, MN. She may have been originally buried in the Faribault Crypt in Mendota.
