About Sylvanus Tripp of Maine

Not a known child of John Tripp, of Portsmouth, Rhode Island

Sylvanus TRIPP was born in 1662 in Kittery, York, MA Bay (ME), or England. He died in 1741 in Kittery, York, MA Bay (ME). He was christened. He was buried in Kittery, York, ME. ! The name TRIPE was used for the first 4 generations, but later descendants used TRIPP. Maine was part of MA at this time. Sylvanus, a weaver, bought land from Margaret's mother that later was known as Tripe's Point and is now part of Kittery Navy Yard. His will, written 29 Dec 1714, proven 10 May 1716, left his entire estate to wife Margaret for mainte- nance for herself and their eight children who were named (GDMNH 694; Maine Wills 188-190) as Willian Tripe, Silvanus Tripe, Samuel Tripe, Thomas Tripe, Robert Tripe, Ionna Pope, Margaret Tripe and Mary Tripe. Inventory L212:06:0. Randall says that he is perhaps the youngest son of John of Newport, but dates tend to make this unrealistic. (Old Kittery and her Families, 83; Jewett, Maquire Anc., 273-283; Valentine 139-140, additional land rec; GDMNH 694; Catherine Briggs, date of death as 1716; Sybil Noyes et al, "Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire" [Baltimore, 1983] 694; Randall, Sylvanus Tripp, unp. ms at New Bedford Library).

He was married to Margaret DIAMOND in 1695 in Maine. Margaret DIAMOND died in Jan 1741/42 in Kittery, York, ME. She was born. She was christened. ! Daughter of William Diamond, the will of Margaret Tripe of Kittery, York, MA Bay, was written 4 Jan 1741/2 and proved 19 Jan 1741/2 (GDMNH 694; William M. Sargent, ME Wills [Portland ME 1887] 435-7). In it were mentioned grandchildren Samuel Tripe, Abigail Tripe, Anna Tripe and William Tripe, the children of son Silvanus; son Thomas Tripe; son Robert Tripe; dau Joanna Pope; dau Margaret Fernald; dau Mary Follet; grandson Samuel Tripe, son of son Samuel Tripe dec.; son Robert Tripe; grandson Thomas Tripe; grand dau Margaret Tripe; grand dau Margaret Pope; grandson William Fernald; children of son Samll Tripe dec. - Sarah Tripe and Anne Tripe. Son Robert Tripe was sole executor. The inventory of 17 Feb 1741-2 was L523:4:2. (Valentine, Tripp Wills, 141; Catherine L. Briggs in statement for Piscatagua Pioneers; GDMNH 694).

disputed origins

From https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/4:1:L8HV-G3H

Document from Enoch Bartlett Tripp Sr. indicates Sylvanus was born on the Highlands of Scotland. DNA evidence would indicate that Sylvanus Tripp (Tripe) is not the 11th son of John Tripp and Mary Paine.
Note that it is more likely that Sylvanus would be buried in Portmouth, New Hampshire which is acorss the river from Kittery than to be burried in Portsmouth, Rhode Island.

From https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Tripp-129

Descendants of Sylvanus Tripp have a DNA that does not match that of supposed brother James Tripp's descendants. Other supporting evidence disqualifies Sylvanus as a son of John Tripp and Mary Paine (so he has been disconnected from them):

From the 1670 Affidavit of John the Founder, John therein counted his children as 11, with one "ded", as he states in the Affidavit. With John's ten children who lived well past 1670, this leaves no room for Sylvanus, then about 8 years old.

A place to seek the origins of Sylvanus may be in the Horkstow Parish Register, or another nearby, in Lincoln.
John Tripp arrived in New England in 1635. Sylvanus Tripp arrived at about age 25 (b abt 1662), which would be about 1687, at Maine.

From http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/TRIPP/2005-10/1129256713

Sylvanus Tripe, born about 1662 [perhaps 1660 in Portsmouth, RI], settled in Kittery about 1690. He married Margaret, daughter of William and Joan Diamond. Some sources say Margaret was born in Portsmouth, also.

  • **I now believe that the above is very unlikely. Sylvanus was probably the son of Gabriel Tripe of Totnes, Devonshire who immigrated to Kittery. The Diamonds of Kittery were also from Devonshire.

I think we can be quite sure that the Sylvanus line is not connected to the John line, here or or in England. Devon is quite far from Horkstow.

He died intestate, but the distribution of his estate is recorded naming his children. He is said to have married (1) Ruth Stannard about 1767 and he married (2) Margaret Starkey, died June 1813. He had one daughter by his first wife and ten children by his second wife. She extensively documented her findings and to this day this is the greatest asset of her work. Conclusions of others place Sylvanus Tripp of Maine as the eleventh and last child of John, in part based on Randall’s manuscript of Sylvanus’ descendants which is an extension of his other manuscripts which trace selected sons of John the Founder.[1]

Descendants of Sylvanus Tripp have a DNA that does not match that of supposed brother James Tripp's descendants.[2] Other supporting evidence disqualifies Sylvanus as a son of John Tripp and Mary Paine (so he has been disconnected from them):

From the 1670 Affidavit of John the Founder, John therein counted his children as 11, with one "ded", as he states in the Affidavit. With John's ten children who lived well past 1670, this leaves no room for Sylvanus, then about 8 years old.
A place to seek the origins of Sylvanus may be in the Horkstow Parish Register, or another nearby, in Lincoln.

John Tripp arrived in New England in 1635. Sylvanus Tripp arrived at about age 25 (b abt 1662), which would be about 1687, at Maine.
