Catherine was a Cherokee woman

Biography

Catherine "Katy" Downing was born about 1782 in the old Cherokee territory, which encompassed most of the Smokey Mountains in Georgia, North Carolina and Tennessee. The family, it seems was located near the Georgia/North Carolina state line. [1][2]

She was married to George Still, about 1796 with at least five children.[3]

Her family was forcibly removed from the old Cherokee territory in the Smokey Mountain in 1838. She was settled in the Tahlequah District of the Cherokee Nation.[4]

She died sometime after 1851 in the Tahlequa District, Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory.[5][6]

Catherine Downing +_____Still: the family group lists two sets of half-siblings that both have the surname of Still, and two of the three in the first set are married to Still's.

Residence: BET 1808 AND 1814. NORTH CAROLINA,CHEROKEE NATION EAST,. Note: According to Starr, The younger children were born in North Carolina, so if this is true, they must have moved from Georgia between 1805 and 1809.

[7][8] Note: The name of Catherine's first husband is unknown. He may not have been a Still, but all of his children went by Still, which was the name of her 2nd husband. Starr's book is the source.

This image is page 25 from a local area magazine named Twin Territories - The Indian Magazine, volume and number unidentified as is the date, The table at left, the genealogy of Major Downing says that Catherine had three children by her first, unknown husband. There is NO evidence that her 1st husband was named Tickaneesky. The document confirms his surname was Still. What is clear (to this curator at this time) from this list is the following, as it aligns with Emmett Starr
