Daniel's father, along with his wife Ann and 3 sons, was sent from Russia to run a post road station on the Riia-Pihkva Maantee, possibly at Misso. Daniel stayed in Eesti, but the fate of the rest of his family is unknown. He married Anna Saks, and they lived near Rogosi Mõis where Anna's father worked. Daniel served in the Russian Tsar's army, and came home for leave about every two years. After his army service, he worked as a recruiter in Võru. Five of their children were born in Rogosi (contrary to what the official documents say), the last four in Võru.
