Tawakehunga was a Great Maori Chief of Mataraua. On his death he was embalmed and placed in a cave, on his own, at Mataraua. The hapu Ngai Tawake comes from this ancestor. No one was permitted to go near his cave because of his High Position and his Mana. Retold by Paepae Witehira, son of Hemi Whautere Witehira in family book by Rosely Webster.
