Thankful's last name is ROUSE. The "Reneff" spelling, found in some records, apparently occurred in the 19th century when a researcher, probably unfamiliar with the lax spelling practices and the penmanship of the 17th century, read the alternative spelling "Roues" as "Reneff". The letter "n" and "u" were written nearly identically and "s" was written like a long " f ". The name of her father - John Rouse, is a matter of record. Ginny Deagan reported that in response to an inquiry, the Boston Evening Transcript Genealogical Column (entry #3496) says she was a cousin of Samuel Jones, a son of Richard and Olive Jones, from Somerset, England, who named her in his will as "Thankful Roues". The Transcript is defunct, but its genealogical query and answer columns reside on the 6th floor of NEHGS. Although she is listed as Reneff in Arnold's Vital Records, she is Rouse in the Plymouth Colony Records.

Thankful's surname is not written clearly in the Rehoboth marriage records. It has been read as Rouse, Rineff, Rose and Rounds.
A Thankful Roues (Rouse) was called "cousin" by Samuel Jones, son of Richard and Alice Jones, in his will dated 28 May 1661. The word "cousin" then often meant a niece or nephew. Alice ([. . .]) Jones married (2) John Kingsley, of Dorchester and Rehoboth, Massachusetts. Thankful Rouse might have lived with her uncle Samuel Jones, then after his death, come to Rehoboth with his widow and her second husband.
It has been suggested that she was a daughter of "John Rouse from Barbadoes of Scituate, Mass., slain in King Philip's War, March, 1676."
It has been suggested that she was the Thankful Rouse, perhaps a granddaughter of Richard and Alice Jones, of Dinder, co. Somerset.
It has been suggested that she was a daughter of Faithfull and Suretrust (Starr) Rouse, of Charlestown, based on the nature of her given name. However, this theory is not supported by the work of H. S. Ballou on the Starr family.
It has also been suggested that she was Thankful (Bowen) Rouse, but the compiler of Ancestral Lines Revised reports being unable to identify such a person.
It has not been established that there was a Thankful Round. However, the connection between Samuel Bullock and John Round is consistent with the two men being brothers-in-law. John Round, said to have come from the Isle of Wight, first appears in Rehoboth in 1689 on Major Bradford's quit claim deed. John Round, then of Swansea, made his will on 16 October 1710, and died 7 October 1716. The will named Job Winslow, Sr., Samuel Bullock, Sr., and John West as overseers. The 1761 will of Richard Rounde, of Rehoboth, was witnessed by Stephen Bullock, Daniel Harding and Amos Bosworth.
