- Biography
- William Devereux was probably born either at Ludlow, where in 1525 his father was steward of Princess Mary’s household, or in one of his father’s residences in south-west Wales, and he is likely to have seen more of Wales than of England during his formative years. He is first mentioned in 1546 when he obtained several leases in Cardiganshire and Carmarthenshire.4
- In the Parliament of 1547 Devereux sat for Cardiganshire and his elder brother (Sir) Richard for Carmarthenshire: their father’s chamberlainship of South Wales, which encompassed the two counties, accounts for their return. This Parliament was to produce an Act in Devereux’s favour. During its fourth session a private bill was passed by which his father granted him an interest in the house and site of the former abbey at Merevale in Warwickshire. By the terms of the Act (5 and 6 Edw. VI, no. 27), which according to his inquisition post mortem was dated 30 Mar. 1552 (17 days before the dissolution), Devereux was to hold the property for life; he could also give it by will or deed to his wife for her lifetime, but on the death of the survivor it was to revert to Ferrers or his heir. The acquisition of Merevale led Devereux to establish himself in Warwickshire: when he sued out his pardon at the beginning of Mary’s reign he was domiciled there. It may also help to explain why he was next to sit in Parliament for an English, not a Welsh, county. After being mistakenly marked as dead (and styled ‘miles’) on the list of Members revised for the session of 1552, he was returned to the Parliament of March 1553 as one of the knights for Staffordshire after an evidently contested election, of which however no details survive. This was a county in which his father had property (and was to die and be buried), his own seat at Merevale was not far away, and he was later to marry one of his daughters into the Littleton family. It is also likely that he benefited from his father’s support for the Duke of Northumberland, under whose aegis the Parliament had been summoned: the sheriff, Sir George Blount, was a follower of Northumberland. The Devereux marital connexion with the Grey family does not appear to have compromised them in the summer of 1553; on the contrary, William Devereux was to reap advantage from the fall of his uncle the Duke of Suffolk when in September 1554 he purchased from the crown for nearly £700 the duke’s forfeited manor of Atherstone, which adjoined Merevale.5
- It was with Warwickshire that Devereux was thereafter to be identified, as magistrate, sheriff and knight of the shire, until his death in 1579.6

- Biography
- Devereux sold his Pembrokeshire lands in 1562, by which time the bulk of his property lay in Leicestershire and Warwickshire. Classified in the 1564 bishops’ reports as ‘indifferent’ in religion, he sat in only one Elizabethan Parliament and is not recorded as serving on any committees.
- He was evidently on close terms with his noble relatives, being one of the feoffees appointed by the will of Walter Devereux, 1st Earl of Essex. In his own will, Devereux left a standing cup to ‘my good lord’ the 2nd Earl.
- In 1578 he was involved in a dispute with Humphrey Ferrers over the stewardship of Tamworth, Staffordshire, and both were ordered to appear before the Privy Council. The dispute reflects Devereux’s growing interest in Staffordshire, increased by the marriage of his daughter Margaret to Edward Littleton, son and heir of Edward Littleton of Pillaton Hall. His other daughter Barbara, married first into the Cave family and afterwards Sir Edward Hastings. Before his death, Devereux settled his estates on his two daughters, appointing as feoffees Thomas Trentham, Richard Hussey, Richard Bagot, Robert Collies, Anthony Green and Lady Jane Devereux.
- He died 28 Sept. 1579. In his will, proved 2 Nov. of that year, he made legacies of property, land, animals and plate to his daughters and sons-in-law. The rent of a house was provided towards the establishment of a free school at Atherston. He bequeathed 13s.4d. to the poor of the town, and a further 4d. to be divided each year among two poor persons who should read the Lord’s prayer and ‘the twelve articles of their Christian belief’ in the parish church. As executors, he appointed his wife and Thomas Trentham, and as supervisors, Richard Devereux and Sir John Cockin.

- He was first married to Mary Grey (1491- 22 February 1538) on 15 December 1503. She was a daughter of Thomas Grey, 1st Marquess of Dorset and his second wife Cecily Bonville, Baroness Harington and Bonville. Cecily Bonville was the daughter and heiress of William Bonville, 6th Baron Harington by his wife Katherine Neville. Her maternal grandparents were Alice Montagu, 5th Countess of Salisbury and her consort Richard Neville, 5th Earl of Salisbury (jure uxoris). By Mary Grey he had three children:
- 1.Sir Richard Devereux (d. 13 October 1547). Married Dorothea Hastings. She was a daughter of George Hastings, 1st Earl of Huntingdon and Anne Stafford. They were parents to Walter Devereux, 1st Earl of Essex.
- 2.Sir William Devereux of Mirevale Abbey. Married Jane Scudamore, daughter of John Scudamore. The marriage produced two daughters, Barbara Devereux and Margaret Devereux.

- The Scudamores of Holm Lacy were a cadet branch of the family settled at Kentchurch: they had acquired Holm Lacy by marriage in the mid 14th century and John Scudamore was himself to augment it. He also built a house there on a site which, according to tradition, had been the dwelling-place of Walter de Lacy and his heirs. Further additions were to be made to the estate by the marriage of Scudamore’s son William with the heiress of (Sir) John Pakington of Hampton Lovett, .... etc.
- Scudamore’s will, made on 20 July and proved on 17 Nov. 1571, was nevertheless as firmly Catholic as that of the more intransigent Thomas Havard, who had refused to subscribe. He bequeathed his soul to God, the Virgin Mary and the company of heaven and gave £20 to the poor to pray for his soul; a further £100 was to be bestowed on his funeral if he died at or near Holm Lacy but otherwise was to be ‘distributed amongst poor people to pray for my soul and all Christian souls and in amending of highways’. His eldest son William had died before 1560 but he still had a large family to provide for, including several grandchildren. Of his daughters, Jane was then married to (Sir) William Devereux of Merevale, Warwickshire. The residuary legatee was Scudamore’s grandson and heir, John, who was to serve in six Elizabethan Parliaments as junior knight for Herefordshire: he was named executor together with Edward Cooper, archdeacon of Hereford, with Richard Seborne as overseer. Scudamore died on 25 Sept. 1571 and was buried beside his first wife at Holm Lacy, the inscription on their altar-tomb praying passers-by ‘of their charity to say for their souls a paternoster and an ave’.9
