Devereux History

The family name Devereux (pronounced Deverooks) arose in Normandy, France around 980 AD. It originally was a contraction of the French "de Evreux" which became D'Evreux, and translates to "of Evreux." Evreux is a city located in the Eure, a region of Normandy, and on the road to Paris. The name was first applied to Robert, 2nd son of Richard the Fearless (4th Duke of Normandy). Robert was created the Archbishop of Rouen at a young age, which required his parents to officially marry to establish his legitimacy. Robert then gained the additional title of Comte (Earl) of Evreux. His descendants would bear the surname of D'Evreux which eventually evolved to Devereux and its later variations.

The Devereux family passed to England with the Norman conquest. The elder line retained the title of Earl of Evreux for the next 100 years until the male line failed. The younger line settled on the Welsh border where its descendants remain to this day.

The Welsh border Devereux's settled at Lyonshall and Bodenham, and over the years gave rise to the Viscounts of Hereford, Earls of Essex, Barons of Whitechurch Maund/Bodenham, Lords of Lower Hayton, and others. This line is also thought to have given rise to the Irish Devereux's by participating in the Norman invasion around 1200, and giving rise to the Lords of Balmagir in Wexford County.

When the Devereux family was evicted from Normandy, their lands were given to a relative of the French king and gave rise to a second and smaller Devereaux family centered upon France. A Jewish family also bore the name of Devereux and settled on the Welsh borders at the same time as the conquest. Their primary ancestor was a Jewish scholar, Moses D'Evreux.

  • Walter Devereux, 9th Baron Ferrers of Chartley, created 1st Viscount Hereford (1488 – 17 September 1558) was an English Peer.
  • He was born in either Chartley Castle or the Chartley Manor which replaced it as the residence of the Barons Ferrers of Chartley following the Wars of the Roses. He was a son of John Devereux, 8th Baron Ferrers of Chartley and Cecily Bourchier.
  • His paternal grandparents were Anne Ferrers, 7th Baroness Ferrers of Chartley and her husband Walter Devereux, Lord Ferrers of Chartley. His maternal grandparents were William Bourchier, Viscount Bourchier and Anne Woodville.
  • William Bourchier was a son of Henry Bourchier, 1st Earl of Essex and Isabel of Cambridge. Anne Woodville was a daughter of Richard Woodville, 1st Earl Rivers and Jacquetta of Luxembourg.
  • On 5 March 1501, his father died and Walter succeeded him as the 9th Baron Ferrers of Chartley. He served with distinction in the War of the League of Cambrai (1508–1516) and the Italian War of 1521-1526.
  • In 1523, the Baron was created a Knight of the Garter by Henry VIII of England alongside diplomat Thomas Boleyn, later Earl of Wiltshire. In the late 1520s he came into increasing conflict with Welsh magnate Rhys ap Gruffydd, after King Henry granted Devereux major powers in Wales. This reached a head when Rhys with a gang of armed supporters threatened Ferrers with a knife in 1529. The two men were allowed to air their grievances, but Rhys' family continued to stir up trouble. Eventually Rhys was charged with treason, convicted and executed. The consolidation of Devereux's position in Wales helped prepare the way for the reformation.[1]
  • He served as Custos Rotulorum of Cardiganshire from 1543 to his death.
  • He was created Viscount Hereford in 1550.
  • He was first married to Mary Grey (1491- 22 February 1538) on 15 December 1503. She was a daughter of Thomas Grey, 1st Marquess of Dorset and his second wife Cecily Bonville, Baroness Harington and Bonville. Cecily Bonville was the daughter and heiress of William Bonville, 6th Baron Harington by his wife Katherine Neville. • 2.Sir William Devereux of Mirevale Abbey. Married Jane Scudamore, daughter of John Scudamore. The marriage produced two daughters, Barbara Devereux and Margaret Devereux.
    • 3.Henry Devereux, died unmarried.
