Mariauchau DÈsgly was ordained in 1734 and consecrated as the 8th bishop of Québec in 1774 and served until his death in 1788. He took this post despite his age and many illnesses (he was deaf as well). DÈsgly was a transitional bishop who administered the diocese without adopting any long term policies. His main concern was a lack of priests. He was unable to say mass in March 1788 and died on 4 June. He did not seek the office of bishop and accepted his transitional status, but could be criticized for complicating ecclesiastical admiinistration by his insistance on living on Île dOrléans until his death.
