Thelma Stols (1955 - 2001)

Brief overview:

Thelma (46), and her husband, Stephanus "Fanie" Johannes Stols (53) were shot dead on their farm in White River Mpumalanga on 15th September 2001.

Police said that Stephanus and Thelma were returning from a church function around 23h00 when they found thieves loading household goods from their home in Yaverland. An unknown number of armed assailants then began firing shots, and Stephanus was hit in the chest and Thelma in the back. They were both killed instantly.

The killers then drove off in the couple's Opel Astra.

White River police were at the scene the following morning and found spent cartridges from a .303 rifle.

  • Around the same time as the Stols murders, Johannes Albert and Hendrik Berg, were fishing at the Klipkopte Dam outside White River when three armed men ambushed them. The men were ordered to lie down while the attackers searched the men and robbed them of their belongings, after which the gunmen fired shots, hitting Albert in both legs, and Berg twice in the back. They then drove off in the victims' white Corsa bakkie and a blue Ford Bantam.
  • The same night, an unidentified 10-year-old boy was found murdered in Tonga near Komatipoort. He had been shot in the leg and abdomen.
