About Thelma Mae Stumblingbear

Stumblingbear -- Thelma Mae (Bointy) Stumblingbear, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away peacefully on August 10, 1998 at the Kaseman Presbyterian Hospice unit. She was 73 years old, born in Lawton, Oklahoma, March 18, 1926.

Thelma married Cecil A. Stumblingbear in January 22, 1949 at Anadarko, Oklahoma. The mother of one son and three daughters, Alfred Stumblingbear, Shalotte, North Carolina, Barbara Collins-Stumblingbear of Lawrence, KS, Debbie Stumblingbear of Crookston, MN, and Brenda Stumblingbear, deceased. She has nine grandchildren, Pete, Jerod, and Jason Buffalohead, Andy and Dustin Stumblingbear, Jocelyn, Nicole (Carter), Andrea (deceased) and Micah Stumblingbear; five great-grandchildren, Allana, Keetha, and Alia Buffalohead, Geoffrey Wahwassuck, and Christopher Carter.

A member of the Kiowa Tribe of Oklahoma, she was the daughter of George Bointy and Bessie Meahkah; the granddaughter of Chief Apeahtone; and great-granddaughter of Chief Red Otter.

She has two brothers, Byron Bointy, Lawton, OK and Thomas Keahbone, deceased; five sisters, Audrey Carter, Lawton, OK, Marilyn Spottedhorse, Mt. View, OK, Barbara Roberts, Gallup, NM, Buena Jones, Philadelphia, MS, and Annette Bointy, deceased.

A graduate of Elgin High School, Elgin, OK and attended the Oklahoma College for Women in Chickasha, Oklahoma.

She retired from the Bureau of Indian Affairs in 1994 with 40 years of federal service. During her career as a federal employee she worked 20 years in Civil Service at Fort Sill, OK, ten years in Indian Health Services at Tucson, AZ, and ten years in the Bureau of Indian Affairs at Albuquerque.

She was a member of the Lawton Indian Baptist Church, Lawton, OK. Services and burial will be conducted at Rainy Mt. Indian Baptist Church, Fort Cobb, OK, Friday, August 14, 1998 at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Larin Kerr officiating. Cremation arrangements were provided by Metropolitan Direct Burial and Cremation Center, Inc., 601 Mountain Rd. NW, Albuquerque, 766-9400.
