About Theodor Carter

Disambiguation: Two Giles Carters

William G. Carter, author of Giles Carter of Virginia, Genealogical Memoir ..., states that the Giles Carter born in 1634 who lived at Turkey Island, Henrico County, Virginia is definitely NOT the same Giles Carter of Gloucestershire, son of John Carter of Lower Swell, who came over with William Tracy on the Supply in 1620 and married Elizabeth Tracy (He did not remain in Virginia, but returned to England) (pp 32-33).[1]

Unknown Origin

The parents of Giles Carter are unknown. The Carter family of Gloucestershire, traditionally used the name, Giles, and he was certainly associated with other immigrants from Gloucestershire.[1]

There is a baptismal record for a Giles Carter, dated Apr 2, 1635, at Cirencester, Gloucestershire, England, which names "Theodor" (Theodore) Carter as the father.[2] This date is consistent with Giles' deposition in 1680 stating his age was 46,[3] and Giles' first son was named Theodrick.[1] However we have no evidence that this baptism was for the identical Giles Carter who lived at Turkey Island in Virginia.

Giles Carter is sometimes assumed to have been the son of Giles Carter and Elizabeth (Tracy) Carter, however Giles and Elizabeth (Tracy) Carter died childless.[4] Their profiles have been detached as parents.

From "Throw the Bloody Books Away" .... GenForum posting of Joy Carter Johnstone of 8 Oct 2002:

I have been researching Giles Carter and family since 1975. In the late 70's my father and I went to Cold Aston and to research England. My father, who was a student of history and it was important to him that we be accurate in our findings. In Cold Aston we visited a church which we had heard about from a cousin who had been to England in the 60's. This little church has a plaque high upon the wall opposite the doorway. It reads as follows: "Anno Dom 1664--Giles Carter the eldest son of John Carter of Netherswell Co. of Gloucester, Esq. his two brothers being John Carter of Charlton Abbots and William Carter of Bressnorton in Oxford married Elizabeth the daughter of Paul Tracye of Standwell and DIED WITHOUT ISSUE." (Capitalization my own.)[5]

Comment:

Note the Gises is mistranscribed in Gyles Carter's Baptism record the descender or the Y is vary faint on my image leading others to believe it is an i . Old style dating was used too. The legal year 1635 started Mar 25 (Lady Day) I have:

The 24th day Gyles fillino Theodor Cartor this is 6 lines down on the page under April the date at the top of the page is 1635 *fillino is latin which indicates Father. And yes though this is not proven to be the father of Giles Carter of Henrico It is highly likely. Theodor also appears in the burial records when Giles was age 9 leaving him an orphan. Giles as an orphan would likely have to be indentured to travel to Va. The naming pattern of oldest son named after father may have been used in this case. This record was in Cirencester, Gloustershire, England.
