"Johannes Theodorus Polhemus..his widow, whose maiden name was Catherine Vo Werven..His children were Theodorus... Theodorus Polhemus was b. on the Island of Tamarica in Brazil. He m. Oct. 14, 1677 Aertie dau. of Teunis G. Bogart by his intermarriage with Sarah dau. of Joris Jansen de Rapalie. Soon after this Mr. Polhemus was chosen a deacon of the Flatbush Church in which he served two years. Prior to 1692 he removed to the town of Jamaica where he d. in 1722 leaving sons: Teunis... Johannes... Abraham..."

Johannes Theodorus and Catherine Van Werven...was born 1646 on the Island of Itamrca, Brazil according to the record of his marriage and died about 1722 in Jamaica, Long Island. On Oct. 14, 1677 he married in the Flatbush Church (HSYB:1898:87) Aeertje Bogert who was baptized Dec. 19, 1655 in the New York Dutch Church (BDC:1:120) and who was living in 1720/1 a daughter of Teunis Gysbert and Sara (Rapelje) Bogert. Theodorus was a brewer, wheelwright and cooper, and resided in Flatbush until about 1683, when he removed to Jamaica. He was an overseer in the town of Flatbush in 1677... He is also recorded as Beacon of the Flatbush Dutch Church in 1679, and a Majistrate there in 1678-79. With three others he petitioned the court on Oct. 25, 1682 for permission to purchase from the antives certain lands on Cows Neck, Long Island, which was denied (CHM:II:249) He was one of the orginal organizers of the Dutch Reformed Church in Jamaica in 1695 and offered to pay 12d quarterly... at the town meeting of Jamaica held on Jan 4, 1699 he and three others were appointed to solicit funds voluntarily for the meeting house (Grace Church)... Later he apprently was connected with the dutch church in both Kings and Queens counties fo on Sept. 19, 1709 he signed a petition as elder of Domine Freeman's Congregation of Queens county (ERNY 798-9) and on Oct. 6, 1709 an oder was issued on the petition of : Dorus" Polhemus and elders of the Dutch church in Kings county (CCM:232). During the years of his residence in Jamaica he was involved in several real estate transactions. On Feb. 20, 1686-7 John Hunt of Newtown deeded to Theodorus Polhemus twenty acres of land in Jamaica... (QC-D:BI:74) and on March 6, 1697 Thomas Morrell Jr. and his wife conveyed to Theodorus Polemus of Jamaica certain shilling rights and privileges in his common land at Newton (NW-TM:II:472). John Montfort and Ida his wife for 380 pounds deeded Theodorus Polhemus on May 1705 sixty acres with buildings; also salt meadows land in Jamaica... (QC-D:B2:79). On May 5, 1718 Benjamin Wiggins of Jamaica sold Theodorus Polhemus of that place, salt meadow land in Jamaica - 1/4 of fifiteen acres for 27 pounds 10 schillings and on Aug. 6, 1720 Gerrit Cl aeson of Jamacia conveyed to Theodorus Polhemus of that palce 14 acres with meadow...for 100 pounds (QC-D:C 159-60 and 271-73). On Nove 17, 1701 a Dutch India Company consisting of Theodorus Polhemus... of Long Island bought of John Harrison and Elizabeth his wife of Elizabethtown, N.J. for 1850 pounds a tract of 12,000 acres of land located and divided it into twelve equal parts. According to the deed, which was recorded Nov. 28, 1701 the land was partly in Middlesex and partly in Somerset counties... (NJ-D:G:339; C-HD:21)... On Aug 22, 1720 Theodorus Polhemus, yeoman of Jamaica, conveyed to Teunis Polhemus (his son) yeoman of Jamaica his land at Flatbush; and on Dec. 5, 1728 he conveyed to Abraham Polhemus of Jamacia son of Theodorus Polhemus for 100 pounds 100 acres of orchard land at New Jamaica next to land now also convevyed to Johannes Polhemus 1/2 of 60 acres of land in Newton and also 1/2 all Meadow land in Jamaica (KC-D:IV:262; QC-D:C:270-1) .. In his will dated Feb 14, 1720-21 and proved May 22, 1722 Theodorus Polhemus of Jamaica... (WYHS:2:249)."
