Thomas Alston accepted Christ as his Savior at an early age and joined Wayman Chapel AME Church, where he was a lifetime member, and he attended until his health declined.
He attended the public schools of Sumter County. Although he was never afforded the opportunity to complete his education, he always stressed the importance of getting a good education, and he supported the efforts of his children and grandchildren to do so. Mr. Alston believed that listening was a key to learning - a principle he tried to instill in his children, grandchildren, and other family members. Because of his gentle, quiet nature, few people knew of his wealth of understanding. Conversation with him revealed an abundance of information that could never be found in any book.
Mr. Alston's talent and diversity were exemplified by his work as a Brick Mason, Carpenter, Auto Mechanic, Land Surveyor, Barber, and Farmer. After many years of farming for a living, he continued to plant a yearly garden as a hobby. His garden always fluorished and was enjoyed by his family and others throughout the community. He commonly received compliments of how his produce surpassed any of the local markets. He took pride in his crops, which were the result of his perserverance and hard work. His generosity and concern for others were shown, as he did whatever he could to assist anyone in need, extending help to many outside of his family. He believed in being honest and diligent, and his life was an example of success earned through work and dedication.
Love and committment to family were key elements of his life. Early in life, he assumed the responsibility of caring for his widowed mother, and two younger siblings. He was later joined in holy matrimony to Ida Mae Croom and was a devoted husband for 54 years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Ida Mae Alston, two sons - Thomas Alston, Jr. and Louis Alston; two brothers - Sammie Alston and David Bowen, and a son-in-law, Lawrence C. Brevard.
