Thomas Anscell of Barford Magna

Thomas Anscell was the son of Edward Anscell of Westmounton and wife Wethlyan Powell. He was born c.1520 in Barford, Bedfordshire, England and died April 27, 1591 in Barford. He married Elizabeth Wheatley, about 1570 in Great Barford, Bedfordshire. They had eleven children.

Elizabeth was the daughter and heir of Robert Wheatley of Cumberland and Catherine Ffyssher. She was born c. 1528 and died in November, 1597 in Barford, Bedfordshire, England. Of their eleven children, six are named in the Visitations of Bedfordshire, while the others are found in alternate sources. Those listed in the Visitations are Mary, Agnes, Rose, Temperance, Wheatley and Anne. Those not mentioned are Nicholas, Oliver, Thomas and an unnamed child.

Thomas was the first of his line to reside at Great Barford, Bedfordshire, referred to as Barford Magna in the Visitations of Bedfordshire. A thirteenth century church still stands in Great Barford, and is probably where the family worshipped.
