About Thomas Babcock, Jr.

DAVIS, THE SETTLERS OF SALEM, WEST VIRGINIA, by Susie Davis Nicholson, Salem, West Virginia, 1992. p. 11, 14, 25

Thomas Babcock is not enumerated on the 1790 Census of Pennsylvania, so apparently settled in Monogalia Co. Virginia until 1792 when he went with the group to establish the Village of New Salem, VA. "After the treaty with the Indians, Thomas removed his family to his nearby farm, where he lived until the fall of 1806. At that time he, with Samuel and Jacob Davis, packed their wagons and set out for the West. They stopped in Green Co. Ohio, where they purchased 420 acres between Mad River and Mud Run." Thomas remained there until his death.

Thomas Babcock was baptized at Shrewsbury, NJ 13 Dec., 1786. He probably was a member of the New Salem Church about 1792. He became a deacon of the Little Bethel Seventh Day Baptist Church of Green Co., Ohio at its organization. (TCD)
